Fernando

BIRTHDAY: September 28, 1996
GRADE: 5th Grade

Fernando has been at Oasis for over 2 years now. He arrived with his brother Mario from Mexican Social Services. For most of his life he accompanied his brother in the streets, stealing, begging for money and selling gum. When he arrived at the Boys'Home, he was undisciplined and unschooled. Through the loving care of Pedro and Fran, he has discovered the joys of living in a Chris-tian family, and has had a major change in his life. He now does well in school, completing this year the 5th grade and is a help at the Boys' Home. Mario and Fernando's mother has been holding Bible Studies in her home with Pastor Jose Luis and is now attending our church on a regular basis. God is using Caring Hearts to bring salvation to an entire family.

Mexico is located in Middle America between Belize and the United States and is slightly less than three times the size of Texas. It is comprised of 31 states and one federal district and has a population of approximately 109 million people. Mexico suffers from extensive pollution which is often the source of various airborne and water borne diseases.

Sometimes we find ourselves eagerly searching across the world to find sources of poverty and distress, often forgetting to remember our nearby neighbors. The United States has four times the amount of per capita income compared to that of Mexico. Mexico also suffers from unemployment, especially with the high number of people from Guatemala who cross the border desperately seeking work. Forty percent of the population is considered to be poor, while 18% live in extreme poverty. As a major drug-producing nation, Mexico is the largest foreign supplier of marijuana and methamphetamine to the United States.

Our efforts in Mexico are focused in San Luis, Mexico near the Arizona border. Though Cornerstone already supports Caring Hearts Ministries as one of our missionary projects, we will now support the program in a new way by sponsoring the orphans at two of their sub-ministries, Bethel Orphanage and the Oasis Boys Home. Bethel Orphanage provides 24/7 care for abandoned children. Through our support, we will assist Caring Hearts Ministries as they feed and clothe the children and provide full-time tutors for their education. The Oasis Boys home was established to provide a safe home along with academic and vocational education for adolescent boys who have been abandoned by their families.

In addition to meeting these kids' physical and educational needs, we want to help them to grow spiritually. We will use this child sponsorship program through Caring Hearts nurture the children's spiritual growth so that they can be free from both physical and spiritual poverty unlike ever before.
